Out With the Old, In With the New: Closet Organization
Posted Under Closet Organization

The seasons have changed over here on the East coast, which means most of us have gone through our summer wardrobe and stored it away. With this comes a whole lot of sorting and reorganizing your closet and drawer space for your fall and winter wardrobe. For most of us, this is a task that takes days to complete and almost feels utterly impossible to perfect.

The fall is my favorite time of year, the winter not so much, but in essence chilly weather means big comfy sweaters and cardigans, jeans, sweatshirts, sweatpants, peacoats, blazers, and boots. It also means a less, tighter space in your closet and drawers for your bigger, bulkier wardrobe. Usually around this time of year, you’ll also go on a shopping spree (or three, or four) to be “in with the new” style and trends of the season. Many of us go wrong here, when we don’t go “out with the old” first.

The main point here is: Don’t be a clothes hoarder! Yes, that sweater from last year is still in style but does it still fit? Is the color faded? Is there a hole in it? And that coat is so comfortable and warm to wear, but is it still in style? If the answer is no, get rid of it! The best way to get rid of something you don’t want – donate it to your local charity, Goodwill, or Salvation Army. You’ll make someone who is less fortunate very happy! Keep this point in mind and make it the first step of your seasonal wardrobe sorting. Once you’ve cleared out the old, then you can start shopping for the new.

When it comes time to sort and organize, where do you start? First start by sorting your wardrobe by the type of clothing it is: shirts, slacks, scarves, coats, socks, etc. Second, fold everything! Get in the habit of always folding right after the laundry is complete, it will make for easy sorting and placement of each article of clothing. Third, chose a destination – do you want this in your closet or in your drawer? Depending on where you chose, here are some product ideas to help for more efficient sorting and organizing:
